A-Class Fire Divisions (SOLAS II-2, FTP Code)
A-class fire divisions defined in IMO SOLAS Chapter II-2 and tested to the FTP Code, including windows fitted in them.
SOLAS Chapter II-2 defines "A" class divisions to limit the spread of fire on ships. They are made of steel or equivalent material and prevent the passage of smoke and flame to the end of the one-hour standard fire test.
Classes
The number states the insulation time in minutes: A-60, A-30, A-15 and A-0. Within that time the average temperature rise on the unexposed side may not exceed 140 °C, nor 180 °C at any one point. A-0 requires integrity without an insulation time.
Testing and approval
Tests follow the IMO Fire Test Procedures Code (FTP Code), Annex 1, Part 3. Windows and side scuttles fitted in a division must keep its class; this is shown by a test report and an approval from an authorised body.
This card is general information and not a certificate; a product's fire rating is shown only by a valid test and approval document. Current texts of SOLAS and the FTP Code are available from the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
