Lamination Technologies

Lamination Technologies

Layered builds of glass, polymer interlayers and polycarbonate, permanently bonded under heat and pressure.

Principle

The strength of a layered build

Laminated glass is made by permanently bonding two or more glass plies with polymer interlayers. If broken, fragments stay attached to the interlayer and the panel largely stays in place. Ballistic glass is a multi-layer, engineered form of this principle.

Layers

The building blocks of ballistic glass

  • Glass

    Glass plies

Strike face and intermediate plies; their number and thickness follow the targeted protection requirement.

  • Interlayer

    Polymer interlayers

Bond the plies, hold broken glass together and help spread the load.

  • Polycarbonate

    Polycarbonate inner layer

Helps limit glass spall from the inner face; can be used to optimise the weight of the build.

  • Function

    Functional layers

Additional functions such as heating, ceramic edge bands, tint and solar control.

Autoclave

Permanent bonding under heat and pressure

The laminated pack is usually processed under heat and pressure in an autoclave; air is removed and the interlayer bonds to the glass. Which layer build, geometry and process conditions are suitable is assessed separately for each project's requirements.
